No More Birds – Bird Free® Gel
Bird Free® Gel is a discreet, non-lethal bird deterrent designed to stop birds from landing, roosting, or nesting on treated surfaces. Rather than harming birds, Bird Free® works by triggering avoidance behaviour through a combination of visual, olfactory, and tactile stimuli, teaching birds to stay away from the area entirely.
Bird Free® Gel is commonly used on commercial, industrial, and residential properties where a low-profile deterrent is required. Depending on exposure, the product typically lasts around 6 months in exposed areas and up to 12 months in covered locations.
How Bird Free® Gel Works
Visual Deterrent (Sight)
Bird Free® Gel contains a proprietary formulation with pyranine, a compound also used in highlighters. When exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, the gel fluoresces. While invisible to humans, birds can see UV light, and the treated surface appears to them like shimmering flames or fire. This creates an immediate and instinctive avoidance response, preventing birds from landing.
Olfactory Deterrent (Smell)
The gel also contains peppermint oil, a well-known natural bird repellent. The menthol within the oil stimulates both the olfactory and trigeminal nerve systems in birds, creating a strong sensory discomfort. This unpleasant sensation reinforces the message that the area is unsafe and should be avoided.
Synergistic Effect
The real effectiveness of Bird Free® Gel comes from the synergy between sight and smell. Together, these stimuli act as a powerful warning signal, allowing birds to quickly learn and remember to avoid treated surfaces altogether.
Tactile Deterrent (Touch)
In rare cases—such as when a nesting site has just been removed—a bird may briefly attempt to return and make contact with the gel. Bird Free® is extremely sticky but non-toxic. While it does not harm birds, they strongly dislike the sensation on their feathers. One brief contact is usually enough for the bird to permanently abandon the area.

Professional Installation Matters
For Bird Free® Gel to be effective, proper surface preparation is critical. Birds are strongly attracted to areas marked by their own scent. If surfaces are not thoroughly cleaned beforehand, birds may continue to return despite the deterrent.
Before installation, the area must be professionally cleaned using a building wash or water blasting, depending on the surface. Once Bird Free® Gel is installed, the treated area must not be water blasted or cleaned, as this will reduce the effectiveness and lifespan of the product.
At No More Birds, we ensure all installations follow best practice to maximise long-term results.

FAQs
To remove bird repellent gel, you will require a scraper, gloves, and some cleaning solvent, preferably of the citrus-based cleaners variety. Scrape off as much of the gel as possible using a scraper, then spray the surface with the solvent to loosen up the remaining active ingredient. Wipe the surface clean with a cloth. In some instances, when the gel has been on for quite a while, it may require repeated applications in order to clean it.
